{"id":1175,"date":"2022-04-06T12:22:07","date_gmt":"2022-04-06T12:22:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.energykids.eu\/?p=1475"},"modified":"2024-12-13T07:40:27","modified_gmt":"2024-12-13T07:40:27","slug":"%f0%9f%92%a6%f0%9f%92%a8-convection-in-liquids-and-gases","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.energykids.eu\/bg\/2022\/04\/06\/%f0%9f%92%a6%f0%9f%92%a8-convection-in-liquids-and-gases\/","title":{"rendered":"\ud83d\udca6\ud83d\udca8 Convection in liquids and gases"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask your parents, grannies, bigger sister or brother, or any other older relatives to help you with these activities below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udc40\ud83d\udd0d<strong> Observation 1<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>You need:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>an aquarium or other large transparent container filled with water at room temperature;<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>a large bowl (or 2 smaller ones) that can be putted in the aquarium;<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>2 small plastic boxes with lids (for example plastic boxes of Kinder chocolate eggs);<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>a hammer, nails, knife, hot boiled water, iced water<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>red and blue food coloring<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><script async=\"\" src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block; text-align: center;\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-2265321283577919\" data-ad-slot=\"9570131598\"><\/ins><br><script><br \/>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<br \/>\n<\/script><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Place the large bowl (or 2 smaller ones) in the aquarium, bottom-up, so that they form a flat surface. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure data-spectra-id=\"spectra-bccd8b91-3325-4d8f-beee-074c2a10ad99\" class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.energykids.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/watercolor.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1479\" width=\"392\" height=\"261\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Make a hole in the lids of the small plastic boxes (using a hammer and nail). Use a knife to make the hole bigger, like a slit about 1 cm long. Fill one of the small boxes with boiling water. Drop red food coloring into it.<br>Now fill the other plastic box with iced water. Drop some of the blue food colorings into it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Place the 2 plastic boxes on top of the large bowl. <br>Push the two small boxes lying sideways in the aquarium. They immediately begin to release the water that is in them. <em>What is happening?<\/em><br><br>If the experiment is performed correctly &#8211; the red water from the hot plastic box rises to the surface of the water in the aquarium, while the blue water (from the cold box) sinks to the bottom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udc40\ud83d\udd0d<strong> Observation 2<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You need:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>a balloon, a pot of boiling water, and an empty glass bottle.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Attach the balloon over the neck of the bottle. Put the bottle in a pot of boiling water. <em>What happens to the balloon when the air molecules that were in the bottle start to heat up?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure data-spectra-id=\"spectra-298be207-c530-410d-8645-db982e9ced99\" class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.energykids.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Screen-Shot-2022-04-06-at-7.00.15-AM.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1480\" width=\"376\" height=\"290\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes. The hot water from the pot heats the air in the bottle. When it warms up, its pressure rises and begins to go up, causing the balloon to inflate.<br>Remove the bottle from the pan and allow it to cool down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>What&#8217;s happening? <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After a while, the inflated balloon dropped as the bottle cooled.<em> Have you noticed that the walls of the bottle are also warm to the touch? Why? <\/em> When placing the bottle in the boiling water, its walls come into direct contact with the hot water molecules. <em>What did we observe? <\/em>This is thermal conductivity through direct contact with the heat source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2705\ud83e\uddd1\u200d\ud83c\udf93 <strong>Check your
